Matter 1.4 adds more Energy Management features

Matter has just released its next version of the standard, produced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA).

This release may take a year or so before we start to see Energy Smart Appliances adopting Matter, but its an important step as governments in UK and EU start thinking about legislating for Energy flexibility requirements.

Matter 1.4 adds the ability for ANY device to be controlled by a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) using the new Device Energy Management utility device type. This allows a device to have its instantaneous power level to be controlled (e.g. V2X support asking an EVSE to modify the charging or discharging power in real time). Alternatively, white goods appliances like washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers can have their cycle delayed or paused without impacting the end user. This can save them a few pence and a few grams of CO2 on each wash – all of which adds up over the course of the product’s lifetime.

There’s also new support for Battery Storage, Heat pumps, Water heaters and Solar PV device types, building on the introduction of EVSE in Matter 1.3.

Our experts wrote the specification and the example SDK – so if you want to know more please get in touch.
