Climate change and the drive to Net Zero has driven a change in the energy industry.
With our grid swapping out old fossil fuel powered generation towards renewable sources, and the adoption of electrically powered low carbon transport (EVs) and heat pumps and air conditioning, we are going to put more and more strain onto our local and national grid infrastructure.
It’s not just about how much energy you use, its about the instantaneous power that is needed which could overload the substation transformers and wires in the ground.
If everyone charges their EV or switches on their heat pump at the same time we’re likely to see more blackouts in the local neighbourhoods, or more likely the DNOs will have to limit how many of us can be allowed to install a heat pump or EV charger in our homes.
Energy Smart Appliances
There is a solution to this – Demand Side Response (DSR) and taking advantage of the inherent flexibility when using Energy Smart Appliances (ESA).
When you plug in your EV when you get home you may only need 4 hours to charge it, but you have a 12-hour window in which to do so. This inherent flexibility can mean we can shift when your vehicle is charged without affecting the outcome, but in doing so can have a massive positive benefit to the grid (and reduce the carbon used).
With intelligent Energy Smart Appliances (ESAs) we can take advantage of smart home IoT protocols such as Matter and the DSR grid control protocols such as OpenADR 3.0 to automatically control how and when the appliances use energy.
